Are Dogs Good For Your Health? Want Proof?

Many people enjoy the companionship offered by man's best friend, but did you know that is now proven – as if proof were ever needed – that dogs are indeed beneficial to our own health.

As reported by MyFox online network dogs are positive influences on allergies, blood pressure, weight control and mental health.

Most people get a dog or a cat for the love and affection it brings, but there are some real health benefits too. Doctors say owning a pet can be good for your heart, and may even help your child overcome allergies.

They may especially benefit children. A new study released in the "Clinical & Experimental Allergy" medical journal found that infants exposed to pets in the home were less likely to develop allergies later in life.

"We play with our dogs, we walk our dogs and children with pets are more aerobically active than those that are not," said Dr. Jeffrey Witt of the Heart at Vascular Institute at Northside Hospital.

"By bringing them to the park it definitely brings me outside. And just seeing them happy makes me happy too," said dog owner Shawn Connelly.

So there we have it. Something that dog owners probably knew all along – owing a four legged canine companion does indeed make us happier and healthier.
